Description
The FR-AV4 is a compact 4-channel field recorder designed to capture high-dynamic-range audio for film, broadcast and content production. It records 4 discrete channels plus a stereo mix directly to SD/SDHC/SDXC media and supports 32-bit float recording to eliminate clipping concerns. Portable and robust, the unit combines timecode generation and HDMI-based sync to streamline audio/video workflows.
Core features include dual AD converters, Ultra HDDA low-noise microphone preamps on four XLR/TRS combo inputs, and a built-in 4-in/2-out mixer. The FR-AV4 records six tracks simultaneously – four inputs plus a stereo master mix – and supports WAV (BWF) and MP3 formats at multiple sample rates. Record formats and options provide the flexibility required for multi-mic location setups.
Performance highlights include a 133 dB analog dynamic range, input mic amp EIN of -127 dB, and frequency responses up to 60 kHz at higher sampling rates. The recorder supports 48 kHz, 96 kHz and 192 kHz sampling and offers 24-bit and 32-bit float quantization. Total harmonic distortion is specified at 0.01% or less under standard test conditions, ensuring clean capture across varied levels.
Connectivity covers HDMI IN/OUT (Type-A, HDMI 2.1 compatible), USB-C for Mass Storage and USB Audio Class 2.0, XLR/TRS combo jacks, 3.5 mm Camera/LINE/TC ports and a dedicated TC IN/OUT. Timecode options include internal, TC IN, HDMI and ATOMOS sync via optional AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter, plus LTC TC OUT compatibility. The FR-AV4 also supports 4K/8K video pass-through and HDMI-based record trigger and cascade control for multi-unit expansion.
Typical use cases include on-camera location sound for indie films and documentaries, multi-microphone ENG shoots, sound design capture for post production and multi-operator monitoring for live events. The FR-AV4 is suited to scenarios that demand high dynamic range recording and reliable AV sync. Its combination of mixer, multi-track recorder and HDMI timecode makes it an efficient single-box solution on location.
Setup is straightforward via the front panel and menu system, and the unit runs on 4 AA cells, USB bus power or an optional AC adapter. Battery runtimes vary by battery type and load, and phantom power is switchable per input. The chassis is slim and lightweight, built for field use and studio integration, and it doubles as a 6-in/2-out USB audio interface for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android devices.
