Description
The 12GM is an SDI transport mini-converter designed to convert between single-link 12G/6G/3G/1.5G SDI and quad/dual link SDI formats. It enables bidirectional conversion between single 12G-SDI and quad-link 3G-SDI, supporting 4K, UltraHD, 2K, HD, and SD workflows. The unit maps pixel formats between Two Sample Interleave (2SI) and Square Division (Quadrant) and supports Dual-Link/Dual-Stream modes.
Key capabilities include quad-link 3G Level A/B Dual-Link conversion, Dual Stream support, simple frame rate conversion between fractional and integer rates, and HDR VPID pass-through or override for colorimetry and transfer characteristic. The converter also passes embedded SDI audio including AC-3 and E-AC-3 and supports up to 16 channels of 24-bit audio. It can be configured as a 1×4 distribution amplifier for duplicating single-link or dual-link outputs.
Performance and format coverage are comprehensive – the 12GM supports 4096×2160 and 3840×2160 at multiple frame rates including 23.98 through 60, 2K and HD progressive and interlaced modes, and supports YCbCr 4:2:2, 4:4:4 RGB and 10/12-bit depths where applicable. Cable equalization distances are specified for common Belden 1694A coax runs and the unit provides input signal diagnostics and a timing analyzer for quad/dual link validation. Convection cooling and an included universal power supply are provided for portable or rack accessory deployments.
Connectivity includes multiple SDI configurations: four 12G-SDI inputs/outputs, 3G and 1.5G quad/dual arrangements, dual 6G, dual 3G dual-stream, and single link outputs at 12G/6G/3G/1.5G/270M. Configuration and diagnostics are accessed through a USB port using AJA Mini-Config on macOS or Windows. The 12GM also supports duplication of outputs when used as a distribution amplifier and preserves SDI metadata and HDR signaling.
Typical applications include live production, OB trucks, post production, playout centers, and broadcast facilities that need format translation between 12G single-link and quad/dual 3G or 1.5G infrastructures. The 12GM simplifies migration to higher bandwidth single-link SDI while retaining compatibility with existing quad-link cabling and equipment. It is well suited to routing 4K/UltraHD signals across mixed SDI infrastructures and validating quad-link timing alignment.
Installation is straightforward with a compact metal enclosure sized for racks or mobile kits and simple USB configuration via the supplied cable and Mini-Config software. The unit uses approximately 12 watts and relies on convection cooling so adequate airflow is recommended.
