The PT-5T and PT-5R form a compact IR extender pair designed to relay infrared remote control signals over twisted pair cable. These units extend IR control up to 250m 820ft, enabling remote operation of equipment located in cabinets, racks, or separate rooms. They are sold as a matched transmitter and receiver set for simple deployment.
The system supports multi-unit IR control and can transmit commands to up to five devices – two local and three remote – using the included IR receiver and emitters. The PT-5T accepts an IR receiver input and provides two IR emitter outputs plus a twisted pair output to the PT-5R. The PT-5R receives the IR signal over twisted pair and provides three IR emitter outputs for the remote devices.
Technical performance is optimized for standard consumer and professional IR systems at 38kHz operating frequency. Maximum operating distance over UTP or STP cable such as CAT 5 is 250m 820ft. Power consumption is minimal at 5V DC with 7mA for the PT-5T and 6mA for the PT-5R, and the units operate reliably between 0 to +40 C 32 to 104 F.
Connectivity is straightforward – the PT-5T uses a 3.5mm mini jack input for the IR receiver, two 3.5mm mini jack outputs for local emitters, and an RJ-45 connector for the twisted pair link. The PT-5R connects to the twisted pair via RJ-45 and offers three 3.5mm mini jack outputs for remote emitters. The system is compatible with common IR receivers and emitters and supports UTP or STP cabling.
Common use cases include controlling DVDs, amplifiers, air conditioners, and other IR-controlled devices hidden in racks, closets, or remote rooms. The PT-5 series lets integrators centralize equipment while maintaining full remote control functionality. It is suitable for residential AV systems, small commercial installs, and light professional applications that require discreet equipment placement.
Installation is simple and requires minimal configuration – connect the IR receiver to the PT-5T, run CAT5/UTP or STP between units, and position emitters over device IR windows.
