The FS1-X is a rackmount frame synchronizer and format converter designed to align and convert SD and HD signals in broadcast and production environments. It provides frame synchronization, up/down/cross conversion, embedded audio handling and extensive analog support. The unit fits a 1RU chassis for space-efficient installations.
Key capabilities include SD/HD up, down and cross conversion, automatic reverse telecine detection and removal, and closed caption conversion that supports CEA-608 and CEA-708 standards. The FS1-X supports simultaneous SDI outputs for both input and converted formats and offers sidebar keying to preserve aspect ratio without letterboxing. A 224 x 224 internal audio matrix enables comprehensive routing between SDI, AES, MADI and analog sources.
Performance is driven by AJA conversion algorithms and 10-bit SDI processing to ensure broadcast-quality images during format changes. Video A/D and D/A converters operate at 12-bit with oversampling for HD and SD. The FS1-X supports a wide range of SMPTE formats including 3G-SDI Level A/B and dual-link HD-SDI modes for 1080p, 1080i and 720p operation.
Connectivity includes dual 3G-SDI inputs and outputs, optional fiber 3G-SDI I/O modules, HDMI input and output, HD component analog I/O, composite SD analog I/O and comprehensive audio I/O including 64-channel MADI over coax or fiber. Control options include a front panel, embedded web UI, SNMP monitoring and a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port for remote configuration. GPI inputs and outputs support external automation triggers.
Typical use cases include broadcast facility format normalization, mobile production trucks converting between legacy analog and modern SDI workflows, and postproduction facilities managing multiple audio and video formats. The FS1-X is suited to situations requiring dense audio channel transport such as 5.1/7.1 production due to its dual 64-channel MADI support. The sidebar keying feature is valuable for retaining channel graphics when upscaling SD 4:3 content to HD 16:9 frames.
Installation and operation are straightforward through the front panel controls or the web-based UI that allows configuration saving and deployment across multiple units. Dual redundant power supplies keep the unit online in case of a PSU failure and internal cooling fans maintain safe operating temperatures.
