The EXT3-U-KIT is a compact USB 2.0 extender kit designed to extend USB, RS-232 and analog audio signals over a single twisted-pair CAT cable. It provides extended reach connectivity and two-way powering over the same cable – enabling remote placement of USB peripherals while keeping the host local. The kit is engineered for reliable signal transport in meeting rooms, classrooms and professional AV installations.
Key features include support for USB 2.0 high speed data rates, bidirectional RS-232 extension and stereo analog audio pass-through. The extender supports interrupt, bulk and isochronous USB transfer modes allowing cameras, audio devices, storage and HID devices to operate remotely. Power over Cable (PoC) capability enables the receiver to be powered by the transmitter or by a local PSU to allow faster charging.
In terms of performance, the system supports USB 2.0 data rates up to 480 Mbps and a transmitted data bandwidth up to 300 Mbps. CAT cable reach is up to 100 m (330 ft) using shielded UNIKAT cabling for USB signals and up to 30 m (100 ft) for RS-232 over CAT 5e. The serial channel operates at 9600 baud and the receiver provides up to 2.5 A total current when powered by an external PSU and 0.5 A per port when PoC powered.
Connectivity is straightforward with RJ-45 connectors for the extension link, a USB-B host port on the transmitter and four USB-A device ports on the receiver. A 3.5 mm mini jack carries stereo unbalanced audio from transmitter to receiver and a 3-pin terminal block supports RS-232 serial control. Status LEDs for LINK and ON simplify diagnostics and local maintenance tasks.
Typical applications include extending room cameras and soundbars for conference and meeting spaces, and any USB 2.0 peripheral extension required in education, corporate, manufacturing or medical environments. The extender supports a wide range of USB devices such as cameras, touch panels, HDDs, audio interfaces, printers and HID devices like keyboards and mice. Dual-role and OTG devices can pair across the link when connected to the appropriate host or device port.
The compact PicoTOOLS aluminum enclosure is fanless and designed for device-back mounting or grouped side-by-side rack mounting using a rack adapter. Installation uses a single twisted-pair cable for both signal and power distribution and requires minimal configuration – the units operate in plug-and-play mode. Convection cooling and robust enclosure construction provide reliable long-term operation in AV systems.
