The DR-40XP is a portable four-track digital audio recorder designed to capture high-quality stereo and multitrack audio in the field or studio. It combines built-in cardioid condenser microphones with dual XLR/TRS combo inputs to record ambient room sound and direct feeds simultaneously. The unit supports WAV up to 96 kHz / 24-bit and MP3 recording for flexible file delivery.
The recorder offers AB and XY mic configurations via swiveling built-in mics and supports mid-side decoding for flexible stereo imaging. Dual-level recording creates safety tracks at a reduced level to prevent clipping, while three auto-level modes – Limiter, Peak Reduction, Auto Level – reduce the chance of overload during capture. Overdub, overwrite punch-in, pre-recording and auto-recording extend control over performance tracking and editing workflows.

Connectivity covers USB 2.0 host mode for file transfer and bidirectional USB audio interface operation with two inputs and two outputs for Mac and Windows. The XLR/TRS inputs accept mic and +4 dBu line signals, enabling simultaneous recording from mixer outputs and onboard mics. Remote control compatibility and a tripod/stand mount point make the unit easy to integrate into location and studio setups.
